The Philae Temple is, along with the ones in Edfu and Dendera, one of the three best preserved Ptolemaic temples. The temple was built in honor of the goddess Isis and was ordered to be built by Ptolemy II. The cult of Isis at Philae island dates back to ancient times and by tradition, every Egyptian was required to make a pilgrimage to Philae at least once a year.
At the beginning of the century, the temple of Philae flooded for 6 months every year due to the Nile’s high waters. For that reason, in the sixties an incredible restoration project was put into place to move the temple piece by piece to an elevated esplanade, which is where the temple rests today and the reason for which visitors have to reach it by boat, making for a spectacular entrance.
