Fayoum is a city located about 95km southwest of Cairo, and even though it is known to be an oasis, the fact is that it is not watered by natural springs but by the Nile River through hundreds of capillary channels. This visit is centered around Wadi El Rayyan, a protected area since 1989.
We start with a visit to Wadi El Hittan or Whale Valley, located in the protected area of Wadi El Rayyan and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for containing fossils more than 40 million years old proving that whales at some point in time were actually land animals. It is the only place in the world that proves it. On the way to Wadi El Rayyan, we will make a stop at Mudawara Mountain, a hill from which you will enjoy some spectacular views of the Oasis, admiring the contrast between the blue waters of the lake and the golden sands of the desert.
We will then move on to Wadi El Rayyan, the only place in all of Egypt that has waterfalls. Wadi El Rayyan is a natural depression 42 meters below sea level and consists of two lakes connected by these falls. This part of Fayoum is famous for being one of the most fertile areas of Egypt and provides significant amounts of fruits and vegetables, as well as hosting an abundance of wildlife. Here we have the option of organizing a picnic lunch around the lake before making our final stop at Medinet Madi. This city dates from the third pharaonic dynasty built by Amenemhat III and completed by Amenemhat IV. Finally, you will be taken back to your hotel/residence.
