LUXOR

Built on the ruins of the ancient city of Thebes, this once glorious capital of Pharanoic Upper Egypt is often referred to as the greatest outdoor museum in the world.

Apart from being among the driest, sunniest cities in the world, and certainly one of the hottest in Egypt, Luxor is primarily identified with its Ancient Egyptian heritage. The city is densely packed with tombs and temples built along both sides of the Nile River.

The sacred sun dictated the structure of Thebes: inhabitants lived on the East bank, where the sun rose and buried their dead on the West bank with the setting sun, which they took to signify death and the afterlife. There lies the great Necropolis of Thebes, which encompasses the celebrated Valley of the Kings and Queens.

Pedestrian and bicycle-friendly, much like Aswan, Luxor is filled with charming resorts and hotels, including the elegant Winter Palace Hotel, a remarkable remnant of a bygone colonial era.
