Anubis is one of the oldest Egyptian Gods.  He is represented predominantly as a lying black dog, jackal or as a person with a dog head or jackal head.  Anubis oversaw the correct embalming procedure. He received the mummy and performed the ceremony of the mouth opening and led the soul to the sky.   Prayers for the dead were directed to him as he was the judge of the souls and his judgment was of decisive importance.
